French football League suspends goal-line technology

first_imgThe French football League (LFP) has suspended its goal-line technology system after a series of errors, including two in League Cup recently. The goal-line technology, GoalControl, used by the French League made a major blunder in a League Cup match of Paris Saint-Germain and the decision has been taken thereafter. The decision will be applicable to all the competitions and leagues that come under LFP, including the top-flight Ligue 1 and the League Cup.ALSO WATCHLFP said in a statement that GoalControl had been warned last month after some errors in the earlier stage of the season. With the recent errors, LFP took the decision to suspend the technology.”… the GLT experienced two serious malfunctions in the Amiens-PSG match… and a second incident in Angers-Montpellier where the GLT wrongly caused the referee’s watch to vibrate,” ESPN quoted LFP director general Didier Quillot as saying.”These two irregularities are unacceptable, especially as they occur just after we put GoalControl on notice.”The suspension by LFP is temporary and their statement added that an adminitrative council will meet next week to decide further action regarding GoalControl. The first blunder was caused by GoalControl during League Cup’s match between PSG and Amiens, where the technology did not alert the referees for PSG’s second goal and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) instead awarded the goal.During Angers v Montpellier, the referee’s watch was vibrated incorrectly by the technology even though there was no goal and thereafter, the referee decided to discard the use of technology completely in the second half.advertisementGoalControl has been used in France since 2015. The Premier League uses the Hawk-Eye system since 2013-14, which has largely been controversy free. There has been a lot of infusion of technology in football lately considering its extensive usage in other sports of the world.VAR has especially been pushed by all corners and have begun to be used in various league and competitions.Even during the League Cup match between Arsenal and Chelsea on Wednesday, VAR was used and two important penalty decisions were taken through the help of the technology. Also, with major errors by referees in the La Liga sparking controversies, it is expected that the Spanish League will introduce VAR next season.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more
