Here is a sampling: Online Business Attire Dear Leslie, I would like to suggest that people look on eBay for upscale business attire. I have purchased many beautiful items – some brand new with tags still attached – for fractions of original prices. Just be patient and you will eventually find what you need. Most sellers will gladly e-mail you the garments’ measurements. If you try on brand-name clothing at retail stores, you will find certain designers who work best with your body type, making it easier to search online. Selections change on a daily basis, and if they are a tad too large, your local dry cleaner will usually be less expensive than a tailor for minor adjustments, such as shortening sleeve length. Be sure you double-check the condition of items with e-mail sellers prior to bidding. Shop wisely, and you will be the best-dressed in the office, which should put you in line for the next promotion! Dear Reader, Thanks for these tips, especially useful for people who are expected to dress well regardless of the size of their paychecks or their financial obligations. Women versus men: Harvard University President Lawrence Summers was right. Women do think differently from men. Women tend to be good in the humanities and the social sciences. Women certainly can be good in science and math. But the tendency is for women to stay away from those fields. Also, a woman’s decision to have a child will, for the most part, affect her career. Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy, the first woman in the Army to achieve three-star rank, said she never could have done it if she were married or a parent. The reason having children doesn’t inhibit men is that a male officer or lawyer or physician is likely to marry a woman who is willing to raise the children. Very few women can marry men who will do that because women in the professions generally marry men who are achievers. Staying home with the kids, however, does not diminish a woman. That is part of her role. The father is expected to support the family. That’s his job. There are male and female roles in society. And I think that is a good thing. Lt. Gen. Kennedy has also talked about expanding opportunities: “I think that we have all grown more confident of the ability of women to perform not only the traditional women’s jobs, but those that are new and unusual for women to fill. The reason more jobs have been opened to women is that women have done so well in each field as it opens up to them.” When we limit what men and women are supposed to do, I think we bury (and therefore lose) the talents of many from both sexes. On the Value of Plan B: Dear Leslie, Your column about having a Plan B as a backup to your Plan A reminds me of the maiden aunt of a friend. As a secretary, she did not earn a great amount but she knew the value of investing. Toward that end, she retained two investment advisers-brokers, each with a different firm. Her strategy was that because each broker knew that she had another, each would give her only the soundest of advice. She left my friend over $3 million – which he since has parlayed into around $8 million. Dear Reader, May her smart, creative strategy inspire others!
